Pretty simple, really. How hard is it to get everybody on board? Make a decision? If it's too easy...you're on the wrong track. Nothing worth doing is ever easy...it's hard, difficult and near impossible to reach out into the ether and make things happen.
If the team is honest, if the team really wants change to happen, it will. It's a long slog, but you'll get there.
Stuff to ask yourself:
Does it really matter - that link, that button, that action?
What do we want people to do here, and is it easy?
Are we making it overly complicated, if so, start chucking stuff out the window.
Does somebody else do it the same, or different? When in doubt...re-invent the wheel. A straight copycat isn't exciting, nor is it evolutionary. It's simply not the real thing...and nobody in their right mind gives up their coke, for a pepsi.
The product guy, the design gal and the engineer...sounds like a joke, right? But those are the three groups that all have to hold hands and walk down the path to make it happen...and when it does, it's magic.
Wouldn't you rather be magical than hum drum?
