Making mistakes in hiring, it's the attitude that counts

The longer I do things, the more I'm convinced it's a limit of your personality that determines the heights (or depths) to which you travel. From hiring dozens of people now, I'm convinced that it's the personality, the attitude, rather than the resume, background or degree that makes people great employees.

You can't teach folks to be positive. But, you can teach them the skills they need to excel at their job :) And the positive attitude will help them grow even when the numbers aren't what they'd like them to be. Or when the boss makes a mistake, gives poor direction, or simply goes the wrong way on something.

Pro tip: next time you're chatting up a potential new hire, business partner or other colleague, try to get a sense of their outlook on life. If it's half empty & the world is something they just put up with, then move on. However, if's it's half full and they're learning how to fill it up the rest of the way, hire them. Now. Or I will.
