One of those things, you know? It might be while driving (don't write & drive, bad, bad idea), you may get some inspiration whilst having your morning coffee (or constitutional) and who knows, the lightening that struck might just be the thing.
Just yesterday while reading books at the local B&N, I was flipping through the marketing section. I think at this point, having read dozens of books with similar case studies over the same businesses, each with it's own unique angle, I have a solid grasp of what I don't know: a lot.
There are some things, though, that I have a solid enough grasp of to be considered an expert. Search Engines, for example. I've built one, designed a few, worked for the second largest and consulted on a few others. That doesn't mean I know everything. All it means is that I have enough experience, knowledge and understanding to answer the basic questions, from a-z, the intermediate questions and even some of the harder ones.
For a long time now, I've wanted to write a book. When I was growing up, I wanted to be a fantasy author. Now, I'm attached to the idea that Jim Butcher will keep churning out amazing stuff, and I'll keep buying it and telling friends. I have no idea if he's good with that arrangement or not, however, it makes me very happy. Giving up on the idea, at least for the next three to five years, of a fantasy novel has made me want to write something about what I do.
It's taken me a while, but I finally found a concept I'm excited about AND that reflects my passions, my interests and my expertise. If I'm writing a book, I both expect it to be good (otherwise, it'll never see the light of day outside my office) and I expect it to be something you can't find in another book. No rehashed case studies. Origanal, as much as anything is truly original. And, the book has to be an experience worth having. Teach something of value. Ideally, it should also sell a few copies.
With all that as a backdrop, lightening struck me the other day. And I'm delighted to have found my book concept. I'm going to be fleshing things out here (where nobody's looking, right?) until I move into Word & really start to hammer it out. Remember: there's nothing to see here, I'm just thinking out loud. This guy does it, too.
