Local search startups are screwed

Let's see, from Yahoo alumnis:
Goodrec (Mihir Shah)
Center'd (Jen Dulski)
Krillion (Joel Toledano)
Yelp (well, Vlado Herman isn't a co-founder, but, he works there & he's a great guy).

Then you have a lot of overlap with...uptake.com (formerly Kango) started by Yen Lee.

So...it'd seem the Yahoo alumni that have jumped into some form of local search far outnumber the Google alumni ;)

However...sorry, but, well, this chart says it all for most of these:

(and even better):

Local search, by definition, is really tough simply b/c you *can't* get 100% coverage at launch...Yelp is where it is today b/c it started with a single metro & then expanded (craigslist anyone?). If you go broad (national) then you're out of luck...I wish all these guys well, however....they have a really really hard slog ahead of them. It's also telling when the site you're imitating (Yelp, primarily) hasn't yet achieved a serious exist or public offering...).

(guys...I wish you well, seriously...however...let's be honest: several of these are simply _never_ going to work.)
