If you have no goals, do you know when you've won?

One of those things that...nags at you. If you don't have a goal, how do you know when you won? Better yet: if you don't have a set number you're trying to reach, when do you decide enough is enough?

In business, it's all too easy to just say, "we want to grow...". However it's far more productive to say, "in the next six months, our traffic will bet at 10 million visitors / month, which represents a 200% increase). Now that is something you can sink your teeth into. Given the goal, you can start to make some decisions:
1) how do you get there?
2) is the revenue associated with the goal what you are after?
3) will all of your stakeholder's be satisfied with this goal?
4) if they won't be, is there a better goal to reach for?

It's about framing your business. It's about trade offs. Let's face it: I am not good at everything, and I'm certainly not great at everything. Neither are you. Neither is anybody :)

What we are good at, is individual. I do this very well, and you do that very well. The other guy? He's good at X. In fact, he's an expert. Given this goal setting exercise...and, given your unique talents, it's far easier to start prioritizing your strategies and implementing them.

Btw, that thing I mentioned, about 10 million visitors per month in six months? That's FunAdvice. Yep, we have a goal.
