I think this should perhaps be rather titled, "great expectations" for mine are very big. Of course, I'm not realistically expecting a sea change as we're working through the product requirements and mocks for our latest re-hash. Nearly seven years into it and we're still not 100% sure that the product is what it needs to be...but, the new version will bring us closest to what we imagined nearly three years ago the first time we set about redefining what we were trying to do and enable.
Does your product serve a neeed?
Yep.
Does it enable others to achieve their goals?
Yes.
Does it enable others to achieve their goals *off* platform?
Not at present. This is what we're working on.
I've realized over the last few years that truly successful web products enable people to achieve something whether or not they are at that companies website. Does Google do it? Yep. Does youtube? Yep. Does facebook? Yep.
Does Yahoo? That I can see, no, unless you count flickr, then it's a resounding "yes". They may have been bought by Yahoo back when I worked there, but the flickr experience still feels like something other than Yahoo-esque...perhaps that will change.
Does Bing (Microsoft)? No...and, I'm 100% sure they are working on improving their own analytics, their own publishing tools, their own webmaster relations and their own search service. I wish them well, even if they never take over Google's position in the market, they can at the very least help to keep Google honest, as unchecked power is never a good thing.
